The Special Operations Forces (SSO) of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported the death of servicemen of the 73rd Naval Special Operations Center on the night of Thursday, February 29. The dead tried to land on the Tendriv spit in the Kherson region. According to the message of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the fighters died while "ensuring the withdrawal of the main forces of the group after completing a special task." The Armed Forces did not disclose the details, there are no official data on the number of dead.

Tendrovska spit is a long, narrow island in the Black Sea near the coast of the Kherson region. In the event of capture of the spit, the Armed Forces of Ukraine would be able to strike the occupied part of the Kherson region (the length of the island is about 65 km) and the northwestern part of the annexed Crimea.

There is a lighthouse built almost 200 years ago on the spit. The island has been under Russian occupation since February 2022.

The command of the special operations forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that part of the Ukrainian special forces managed to perform a "special task", but during the withdrawal they entered into battle with the Russian enemy.

"Ensuring the departure of the main forces of the group after the completion of a special task, the soldiers accepted their last battle, forever remaining in the formation. The heroic and extremely difficult combat work of the units of the SZG on land, at sea and in the deep rear of the enemy is the daily contribution of the soldiers of the SZG to the victory over the enemy," the statement said.

The 73rd Marine Center named after Kosh Chief Anton Holovaty is a military unit of the Special Operations Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, located in Ochakiv (Mykolaiv Oblast). The fighters of this center are engaged in sabotage operations, carrying out reconnaissance activities, capturing ships and coastal structures.

It was this unit that was engaged in operations to protect the coast of the Mykolaiv region, as well as the liberation of Zmiiny Island in the Black Sea.
